The names of the birds appear in Basque in the main global database

From now on, it will be possible to explore birds in Basque in the official list that includes all the birds in the AviList world.

The AviList is a unique and unified taxonomic list of all birds in the world, published in 2025. After a year, several updates have been made, including the possibility of exploring the common names of birds in Basque.

“on the EBird platform, anyone can share information about birds in the area, and it can also be used in Basque.”

As explained by Asier Sarasua, the main institution involved in the AviList project is Cornell University, and much of the information to complete the list is acquired through the eBird platform of the same institution. On this platform, anyone can share information about the birds in the area and also use it in Basque.

On the other hand, a large working group within the Basque Ornithological Commission has been updating and completing the lists of common names of birds in Basque in the world since 2020. Thus, common names in Basque adapt to taxonomic changes and make proposals for species that do not have names in Basque.

Therefore, thanks to the collaboration between the AviList and eBird platforms, the complete bird gazetteer in Basque has been saved in the AviList database.
