Capuchin monkeys also eat meat

It was believed that chimpanzees and humans were the only primates eating meat.

Sapajus libidinosus belongs to the group of capuchin monkeys. They have analyzed a population living in northeastern Brazil and found that they hunt and eat small mammals and reptiles.

However, fruit and other plant-based foods are the basis of the diet of these monkeys, and in the absence of these foods the animals begin to hunt. Researchers suggest that this trend may explain how humans began hunting and eating meat during evolution.

In the same study, it was observed that these monkeys carefully process the hunted animals. They found that they prefer the brain and internal organs of the animals and concluded that they eat the parts with the highest fat and nutrient densities.
