Photo of the week: El Niño calling

Almost on the eve of World Environment Day, the World Meteorological Organization has warned that this same month, the atmospheric phenomenon of El Niño could develop and affect the circulation of the atmosphere around the world.

The report published by the meteorological organization indicates that since May, warmer temperatures have been detected in the Pacific Ocean, in the tropical zone, which could cause the imminent appearance of El Niño. It is concluded that there is a high probability of occurrence between June and November, around 90%. It is expected to be noticed mainly between June and August.

On a global scale, the most extreme weather phenomena that El Niño entails will be observed: in some places, extraordinary torrential rains and hurricanes; in others, droughts and strong heat waves. The last time El Niño opened, the planet met a record of global temperatures.

The United Nations (UN) has placed the phenomenon in the context of global warming, precisely during the week in which World Environment Day is celebrated. This year’s Environment Day has launched a direct call for climate action, and the UN itself, through its Secretary General, Antonio Gutierres, has declared that “we must end our society’s addiction to fossil fuels” because they are the main emitters of CO2 emissions.
