King's syndrome down

1989/01/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

According to the Center for the Control of Infectious Diseases of Atlanta, in the United States the notifications on the syndrome of El síndrome de Reyes (until in 1985 555 cases were registered, last year were only 101).

The distribution of cases by age is similar to that of previous years: 38% of patients are under four years old, 12% are between five and nine years old, 34% between ten and fifteen, 15% between fifteen and twenty and only 2% are over twenty years old.

In 91% of recorded cases, patients had a history of disease during the three weeks prior to the onset of the syndrome, usually of the respiratory tract (74%) and in the rest the condition was varicella, diarrhea or fever.

Although the etiology of the disease is still unknown, most of the studies have confirmed that there is some relationship between the intake of acetylsalicylic acid and the subsequent appearance of the syndrome (continuous jumps, alterations of the mental state and seizures in 30% of patients).

This important decrease in reported cases has been sought by decreasing the doses of acetylsalicylic acid prescribed in childhood diseases.
