Felix Goñi, winner of the Euskadi Research Prize

The Department of Education of the Basque Government wants to reward the work it is doing in molecular biophysics, especially research on the molecular mechanism of the fusion of cell membranes. Specifically, the influence of the lipid domains and the activity of phospholipase and sphingomelinase enzymes in the fusion of cell membranes is being investigated. In addition, it investigates the penetration of toxins and other proteins in membranes and also works with proteins that intervene in the conjugation of bacteria and quantitative methods to study the structure of proteins.
Among the applications of these research are health care, which can help decipher the cause of certain diseases. Some diseases are due to changes in the structure of proteins, and to understand infections of many viruses it is necessary to know how the membrane of the virus and the cell merge.
Felix Goñi has directed numerous research at universities such as Navarre, Santander, London and Canada. He is also a member of several scientific societies: the Spanish Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Spanish Association of Biophysics, the British Association of Biochemistry and the Biophysical Association of the USA and the Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
The Euskadi Research Prize was created in 1996 by the Basque Government with the aim of promoting and disseminating research projects affecting Euskal Herria. It should be noted that together with Felix Goñi there were 14 more candidates and that the jury decided to award unanimously.
The prize, endowed with 36.060 euros, will be delivered at the beginning of the next year.
