[First quantum computer research project in the Basque Country in search of anti-Alzheimer drugs]
The Basque Government has prioritized the application of the computational capacity of the IBM Quantum computer in the Basque Country. Specifically, it will be used to identify new therapeutic targets for future drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's, within the framework of an international alliance formed by the Department of Health of the Basque Government through Biobizkaia, Osakidetza and IBM Cleveland Clinic.
“The quantum computer will allow them to process and analyze large amounts of biological data.”
In fact, thousands of genes and biological processes are involved in Alzheimer’s, and with traditional computer methods it is very difficult to study all the interactions between them. The quantum computer will allow them to process and analyze large amounts of biological data.
The team of the Biobizkaia Institute is working on the development of a quantum algorithm for the identification of therapeutic targets and their subsequent validation in brain organoids. These brain organoids are cell-based in patients, so they are ideal for personalized treatments. Likewise, the information obtained in the laboratory will be useful for the retraining and improvement of algorithms.
Although they have started with Alzheimer's, they will also explore the use of these algorithms in other diseases.
