Look at the phone, smile… Click!

Very recently, upon hearing such a phrase everyone would be surprised. Today, however, almost everyone has seen a mobile phone with a camera or video, except in a TV ad. Apparently these phones are increasingly widespread, but they will have to overcome many obstacles to reach the majority.
85% of mobile phones sold last year in Japan were on camera.

Mobile phones have been very successful. More than one of those who at first said that he would not have any such device now carries his in his pocket. In fact, it is true that they facilitate communication and become essential for certain situations and actions. And, without being essential, they are great entertainment toys; ask us, if not, those who are constantly sending short messages...

Mobile phone companies, on the other hand, are obliged to frequently launch new models, otherwise the market would be saturated and sales would remain. That is why they invent increasingly special and complete devices. However, not everyone has had the same welcome as the basic models. For example, in the late 90's mobile phones with Internet access were removed. But used to computers, users seemed illegible, since the screen of mobile is usually small. Therefore, these phones did not have the expected success.

As for mobile phones with camera, it seems they have been very well received or shown by television ads. It seems that mobile phones with camera are really attractive: you can send anyone an image of your head or the place where you are, kisses sent by phone, in addition to the sound, they can have colors, you go on vacation and you will gather in a single tool the phone necessary to be in contact with your family and the camera of photos that you will save on your computer...

The cameras on these phones are like conventional digital cameras.

According to sales data, people have liked this device that associates leisure and need. In the last quarter of 2002, 62% more camera mobiles than in the previous quarter, 8.4 million have been sold in the last quarter. In total, since its launch, it is estimated that 20 million camera mobiles have been sold worldwide, mainly in the US and Japan, followed by the western countries of Europe. In the last quarter of last year, 200,000 mobile phones with cameras were sold in western Europe.

Mobile with camera

The cameras that mobile phones have are like other digital cameras. When using the mobile in camera mode, the screen works as a camera viewer and lets you see what image you want to take in the photo. The trigger is one of the keys on the mobile. Many camera mobiles also have a small mirror on the camera to take pictures of yourself, and some also have a flash.

The simplicity of taking and sending photos without permission with mobile camera has generated a concern for the right to privacy in different places.

Once the photo is taken, it can be stored in the internal memory of the mobile phone, sent by email to another mobile or computer or saved in the photo album of a network server. The latest models allow you to edit the image, resize or make graphics on the photo, among others.

Mobile companies have indicated that in some situations camera phones are really useful. For example, in some Japanese hospitals the Sha-mail service has been implemented. Thanks to this service, nurses or doctors who have come to an emergency have the possibility to immediately send magnetic resonance imaging to specialists. This way, specialists can tell you what to do until you arrive at the hospital and after arriving you have everything you need to give the treatment. They also consider it an ideal tool for police, service companies, marketing, etc.

Technology not yet available

However, mobile phones with cameras do not have everything in favor. To begin with, the quality of the images is quite poor and present quite a few defects. They must find better photographic compression systems and offer more possibilities for photographic transformation. In addition, they must reduce or maintain at least the prices if they want the sale to increase.

Mobile producers consider that they are a very useful tool not only for leisure, but also for work.

However, the main problem is in operators. In fact, European operators have already begun to implement the multimedia interfaces required by the service. This makes camera phones have big drawbacks. For example, often two mobiles using different networks cannot exchange data.

Aware of this problem, mobile producers and operators come together to ensure barrier-free telephony. Currently in Europe two networks are being implemented, GSM and GPRS, and there are numerous operators that offer their services. The purpose of the agreement is for users to send and receive multimedia data via mobile in the country in which they are located, using any operator and network. If we don't get it, demand won't grow and the mobile industry knows that perfectly.

Camera phones are prohibited!

This has been promised by the government of Saudi Arabia. Some used to ‘capture’ the images of women. Not only that: then those photos taken without permission were sold in stores.

However, when the ban was imposed, the government gave no explanation. It seems that the commission of promotion of virtue and prevention of life took the mobiles with camera from the beginning, and seeing how and for what some use them, have banned these devices.

But the problem is not limited to Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates is punished with a terrible fine to those who photograph women without permission. And in Britain there have also been similar. For example, a health club chain has banned the use of mobile phones in changing rooms. Those responsible for the chain say that it is very easy to take photos without realizing with mobile camera, while it is much more difficult to know who has taken the photos online, since it is not necessary to save them in memory. Therefore, there is no way to prove who has been guilty.
