Photo of the week: at the end of the street

What's happening at the end of this street? They are not auroras, but columns of light. A phenomenon that happens much closer. It can happen almost anywhere on the planet. It is a column of light that seems to expand from the Sun, formed by flat and undulating ice crystals that reflect the sunlight of the upper atmosphere.

Normally, these ice crystals evaporate before they reach the ground. But at sub-zero temperatures, these ice crystals can form near the ground: they are called crystal fog. These small ice crystals can then reflect the lights of the earth, not the Sun. In this case, the photograph was taken in the city of Mohe, China.
