Photo of the week: Bouba is round and kiki pointed
Which of these two orange figures in the photo is “bouba” and which is “kiki”?
If the answer has been that the one with the round edges is “bouba” and the one with the sharp edge “kiki”, it coincides with the answer given by the txita in the photo. Moreover, it is consistent with the response that people who have been educated in different cultures, languages and alphabets would give, and also with what the dogs would express.
The Bouba Kiki effect is based on a classic experiment in psychology. The individual is shown two figures, one with rounded edges and the other with vertices. He is then asked which of the two is “bouba” and which is “kiki”.
The coincidence of all the answers shows that the brain relates the information that comes to it from both senses, in this case associating a soft sound with a round shape and a more acute sound with a more acute image.
The chick in the photo, and many others, were subjected to the Bouba Kiki experiment, but instead of answering verbally, they approached the image when they heard each sound. The experiment was a success.
