Anne L’Huillier and Donna Strickland with us
The movie is over. Now it is the turn of the great scientists in San Sebastian, which gives us the opportunity to be with the Nobel Prizes at the Passion For Knowledge Congress, organized by the DIPC Center. This year, French Anne L’Huillier has been with us. In the previous edition, the Canadian Donna Strickland. Both Nobel laureates in physics, and both women.
In San Sebastian, physicists appear immediately after the departure of the acclaimed actors and directors of the Festival. The glamour point is set by the Victoria Eugenia Theater, and it is these scientists of the highest level who bring the amazing stories. Just like at the Festival. Or almost.
“I don’t want to be like Brad Pitt,” L’Huillier tells us. He prefers to “hide” in the laboratory and dedicate himself to science. He doesn’t like interviews either. And yet, he has given us his time.
Donna Strickland told us that they both have a certain private group or ‘club’, along with astrophysicist Andrea Ghez. Five women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in history, but three of them are still alive today.

“I’m in contact with Donna,” says L’Huillier. “We talk often.” It’s not just because they have the Nobel Prize, but the works of both are intimately linked. They both work with lasers. Donna Strickland invented a technique to manipulate the laser beam and dramatically increase the intensity of light. And Anne L’Huillier took advantage of this technique, along with many other tricks, and developed the method to obtain the shortest laser pulses ever produced. They are the pulses of attoseconds, the shortest pulses that we can produce and with which we can measure the shortest time scale.
“The work of Strickland and L’Huillier is inextricably linked: they both work with lasers.”
The connection between these Nobel laureates goes further; in L’Huillier’s research he exploits a phenomenon predicted by the 1963 Nobel laureate Maria Goeppert-Mayer, the absorption of both photons. For this reason, the works of three Nobel Laureates have been combined in the physics of the attosecond. Laurena, if we include Marie Curie's background.
strickland, along with physicists Gerard Mourou and Arthur Ashkin, received the Nobel Prize in 2018. in 2023, L’Huillier shared the award with Pierre Agostini and Ferenc Krausz.

Strickland and L’Huillier. For example, thanks to it, a surgeon can kill the cells of a tumor with great precision and design the electronic device that controls this laser.
It's been a great privilege to be with both of you. Donna Strickland's interview was aired on the Northern Ferrokarrilla radio show in 2024. And Anne L’Huillier’s interview will also be on the same show soon.
