Scientists at work

Two researchers lead a flock of hermit ibis (Geronticus eremita) through the fields and olive groves of Jaén. A 50-day migration journey from south-east Germany to south-west Spain is coming to an end.

The Waldrappteam conservation team works to reintroduce Ibis hermits in Europe. The birds are raised by hand, creating a strong bond between the birds and the caregivers. In this way, the birds happily follow their foster parents, who guide them during their migration.

A member of this group is Gunnar Hartmann, a student at the University of Koblenz, Germany, whose job was to help plan the route and document the trip through photographs. This photograph has won the 2026 edition of Scientist at Work, a photography competition organised by the Nature magazine.
