Science as a goal

This spring, the 2022 survey of the vision of science and technology in Spanish society was published. Published biennially by the science and technology foundation FECYT since 2002, it is useful to know more or less the vision of Basque society, in the hope that the trends will be similar in all communities (data are not separated), as well as in the North (where we do not have data).

If you look at the evolution of the answers, in the last 20 years, the interest in science and technology has been growing and the belief in being informed. The main source of information has been the Internet since 2012 and the place of paper media has gradually decreased. The opinion about scientists has always been very good, but fewer and fewer people believe that it is an attractive profession for young people, that it has a reputation and that it is well paid.

On the other hand, over time, the percentage of those who believe that the benefits of science and technology outweigh the risks has increased. There has also been a proliferation of those who believe that scientific knowledge is the best basis for rules and laws, as well as those who believe that citizens should have direct participation in decisions on science and technology when they are directly affected.

With this in mind, it is clear that a scientific culture is essential for a sovereign, responsible and democratic society. And in fact, it is the mission of Elhuyar magazine to contribute to this.

For this purpose, among other projects, the CAF-Elhuyar Awards were also created. In this issue we have published the award-winning works in the categories of informative articles and works based on one’s own thesis. The themes have nothing to do with each other, but the young people are the authors of both, and both manage to infect their passion for knowledge and spread scientific knowledge. The Bejondeiela!
