Nuclear power plant dismantling

1991/02/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The Niederaichbach nuclear power plant in Bavaria, Germany, has begun to topple.

This central station is only a few kilometers from the city of Landshut and went out 17 years ago. The plant, built between 1967 and 1972, only worked for eighteen days with a capacity of one hundred percent.

Originally suffered a series of breakdowns in heat exchangers that forced to reject the project that cost 232 million frames. To eliminate the project safely, combustion elements and heavy water were introduced into safety vessels. The annual cost of care since then has been one million marks.

Since the end of November, work is underway inside the reactor. A rotary manipulator remotely dismantles the heart of the plant, which is heavily contaminated. The pieces are cut into small pieces and placed in special containers. They are then transported by rail to the Karlsruche nuclear research centre and stored in the existing tank.

More than 185 million frames will be spent on demolition works and a radioactive leak cannot be ensured during its duration.

So, reader, take it accountable.
