According to a study by the University of California, learning to play the piano for ease in mathematics is an advantage. Scientists Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher have divided children aged three and four into four groups. They have used comparative and form-recognition tests, as these are intellectual functions related to mathematical ability.

Before performing the tests, for three months of the four groups he studied piano, singing or computer science for ten minutes a day. The fourth group did nothing. The best results of mathematics were obtained by the pianist group, much better than the other three. According to researchers, people who study piano increase the number of connections between neurons in an area of the brain, which is the one that deals with the space/time reason (by understanding mathematics).
