2003/05/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Antarctica is the most unknown continent in the world, whose harsh conditions make direct research virtually impossible. Therefore, more and more robot vehicles are being used.

The Autosub autonomous underwater vehicle is basically a robot. His mission will be to study the bottom of the Pine Island glacier, located in the Amunds Sea, to explain the influence of global warming in Antarctica. The glacier melts quickly and thanks to the data it will receive they hope to know if the thaw is due to temperate currents or something that influences the glacier itself.

Autorises will measure salinity, temperature and water currents. It will also map the seabed and the bottom of the glacier. In addition, you will receive water samples for further laboratory analysis.
