Today begins the era of the quantum computer in Donostia
As of today, October 14, San Sebastian will be one of the few cities in the world to have a quantum computer. In fact, IBM Basque Country has just inaugurated the most powerful quantum computer in the IBM network. According to those responsible, it is not predictable what it will bring, but they hope it will be revolutionary.
IBM Basque Country is integrated into IBM’s worldwide network of advanced quantum computers. The other two computers in this network are located in the United States and Japan.
This system, managed directly by IBM, incorporates the IBM Quantum Heron processor, the most powerful developed to date. 156 is a qubit processor, of the transmon type, formed by layers of supereoal and insulating materials, on which the operation of the qubit is based in the tunnel effect movements of the electrons.
This allows you to simulate circuits with up to 5,000 two-bit quantum operations. Thanks to its modular design, it will be possible to integrate several processors in the future, which is a great qualitative advance in terms of capacity and performance of European quantum computing.
Among other things, they hope to be useful in bringing progress in areas such as personalised medicine, the creation of new materials, the improvement of computer security and the resolution of complex economic and environmental problems.
