The ASTRA 1K satellite is destroyed

2002/12/10 Carton Virto, Eider - Elhuyar Zientzia

ASTRA 1K was the largest civil communications satellite ever built. At the end of November it was spaced by a Russian boat Proton K, but it was released too quickly and could not be put into orbit. After several attempts to take it to the corresponding height, the company Alcatel has decided to redirect and destroy the satellite to Earth.

ASTRA 1 has been completely destroyed this morning in the Pacific. Here it has entered the atmosphere when it was three in the morning and the company Alcatel has announced its total dissolution.

The ASTRA 1K satellite had to revolutionize European telecommunications. Along with three others like him, he had to form a quartet that offers new and better services in the world of television, radio and the Internet.

Alcatel already has a telecommunications system of 13 satellites in space and 1K should be the fourteenth. Now I had to take on the work of the three who are in orbit and be a grip point for the other three who want to launch in the future.

Alcatel indicates that the ASTRA 2C and 1H satellites are replacing 1K so they will continue to provide the service.
