Photo of the week: family of the fire


Wildlife in the tropics of Mexico is full of color. The birds proudly show their plumages mixed with colorful flowers. The scarlet red plumage of the male Pyrocephalus rubinus is not for camouflage, but quite the opposite. It is a brilliant visual signal to attract females and defend their territory against other males. The females are grey and brown.

He's the master of flying hunting. From an open place, observe and make short and fast flights to catch insects in the air (flies, bees and butterflies, for example) with admirable precision.
