Photo of the week: Symbol of the Sun

Astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to elucidate the origin of some radio waves. The structure shown in the image is the origin of these waves, which the authors have named “Sol’s symbol” because it looks like a musical symbol.

The bright spots visible at the back of the image are clusters of galaxies, galaxies and stars.

The center is covered by an oval cloud of blue or violet color. It is a gas, millions of degrees away, that has been made visible by the detection of the X-rays.

Finally, these neon-pink lines that attract the gaze draw a symbol of soles on the cloud. They can be seen by radio waves.

The authors believe that this structure has been created in two steps. First, a supermassive black hole ejected charged particles and generated radio waves. Over time they have lost energy and now we perceive them as blue X-ray clouds. Later, two groups of galaxies collided, a process that again generated radio waves that now look like pink lines.
