Worms of colors

2003/04/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Lumbricus rubellus worms vary in color depending on the metals present in the soil: in the soil with arsenic they acquire a bright yellow color, while with lead they are dark and almost transparent with zinc.

In addition, they are able to withstand high concentrations of metals that would be toxic to other worms. Therefore, it is considered that they can be used as markers of contamination, as well as for the extraction of metals from the soil.
