One more step to cure cirrhosis

2001/12/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

A group of American and British scientists have managed to identify and block the protein that causes liver cirrhosis. Therefore, an important step has been taken in achieving adequate treatment against cirrhosis. As is known, chronic diseases such as hepatitis or alcohol abuse cause scarring in the liver.

To cure them, the body makes fiber fabrics. But sometimes fiber tissues grow too much and then cirrhosis occurs because scars deform or hinder normal liver function. Research scientists have found that excessive growth of fibrous tissue is due to protein C/EBP. Without conforming to knowledge, scientists have performed a genetic transformation of protein, which has allowed blocking the role of protein. All this with the mouse.
