Chernobil
1987/06/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria
Just a year ago there was the unfortunate accident of the Chernobil nuclear power plant. Last January, the last plaque of the sarcophagus that covered the central one was installed.
To protect themselves from radioactivity spills, the Soviets have built a double pyramid that covers the entire outer surface with steel plates. Above all they have placed a hermetic plastic. During the month of January, radioactive materials inside had a temperature of 130 °C and sarcophagus had to undergo a system of venteos.
The venting air, conveniently filtered, is ejected from the visible chimney in the image, with a radioactivity less than 3 milicurie/day.
