Flame in space

2011/06/30 Kortabitarte Egiguren, Irati - Elhuyar Zientzia

How is the flame without gravity? The flame is very different in space and on Earth. Sandra Olson, aerospace engineer at NASA's Gleen research center, has checked it in images.

This beautiful superior image has been achieved by superimposing three images of a flame in a state of microgravity. Each image shows the propagation of the flame in a pulp paper in a microgravity state. The different colors represent the chemical reactions that occur in the flame. The blue zones are due to chemoluminescence (light produced by a chemical reaction), while the areas of white, yellow and orange are the result of the bright soot of the flame.

This image has won the Combustion Art Competition 2011 competition.
