The virtues of proteins can save neurons in danger of death

2002/03/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Neurodegenerative diseases affect certain types of brain and spinal neurons in humans over age 50. This research has focused on the study of Motor Neuronal Disease (ALS), which destroys both brain and spinal motor neurons. These cells are responsible for limb movements and their destruction produces muscle atrophy and finally death.

The increase in Apoptosis Inhibitory Proteins (API) in neuronal motors prevented their degeneration.

This discovery opens up a new opportunity to seek suitable treatments for diseases such as Parkinson or Alzheimer's.
