The role of prions in healthy animals is not yet clear, but at least they have found a small footprint: they help the division of stem cells. The Whitehead Research Institute in Biomedicine of Cambridge had as its objective the continuous division of stem cells. After this, they observed that in the hematopoietic stem cells (precursors of blood cells) many prions were expressed and that the stem cells that express prions last longer.
