Palaeolithic engravings have been found in the cave of Santakutze, in Debabarrena
Four panels with engravings have been found, including figures of a bison and a goat, both unfinished, and some stripes.
The Santakutze cave was discovered in 1985 by the Munibe group (Peralta, Guipúzcoa), while the engravings were discovered in 2023 by members of the Suharri cultural association. The members of the UPV/EHU Prehistoric Research Group (GIZAPRE) have collaborated with them. Specifically, the study on human occupation was carried out by María José Iriarte Chiapusso (UPV-Ikerbasque) and Álvaro Arrizabalaga Valbuena (UPV/EHU), while Cesar González Sainz (University of Cantabria) analyzed the graphic record. The results have now been presented, confirming that, according to the technique of engraving and styling, the graphic representations belong to the advanced Upper Paleolithic, but at the moment it is impossible to determine more chronology.
