They have developed a method to classify carbon nanotubes based on their diameter and electrical properties. These structures are constructed by collecting graphite layers, but they are so small that it is difficult to determine the direction and diameter of nanotubes in this process. Nanotubes have different electrical and optical properties, in which direction they have been grouped, so they must be classified according to these properties.

Some are metallic and used as conductors. Others are semiconductors and are used for the manufacture of nanotransistors. At the same time, the larger the diameter, the greater the dielectric constant.

The technique developed for the classification of nanotubes consists of subjecting a solution with nanotubes to an electric field. Thus, nanotubes are ordered in the gradient of the electric field by dielectric constant.
