The treatment of alternative hormones for menopause has no effect on longevity

To prevent or treat the particularly severe symptoms of menopause, some women are treated with replacement hormones. This treatment is personalized, that is, the professional takes into account the characteristics of each woman to decide if it suits her or not. However, experts believe that many women are suspicious of serious side effects, so they refuse to do so despite the professional’s recommendation.

In a study now published by the British Medical Journal, it has been shown that hormone therapy is not related to the risk of death, that is, it does not shorten the longevity of life. The study was conducted in Denmark, tracking 800,000 women over the age of 45 for an average of 14 years.

Factors such as whether or not hormone therapy was used and for how many years, the history of some diseases such as liver disease, cancers, circulatory problems, etc., age, number of children, origin, income, educational level, etc. were taken into account

“If the contributing factors were taken into account, there were no differences, even with 10 years of alternative hormones.”

Thus, it was observed that, regardless of the factors that cause it, 54.9 deaths occurred per year per 10,000 people in those who received hormone therapy and 35.5 in those who did not. But if the causative factors were taken into account, there were no differences, even with 10 years of use of alternative hormones.

What’s more, in those who had their ovaries surgically removed for reasons other than cancer, the results suggested that taking hormone therapy was beneficial. Researchers believe that it is worth investigating to see if it is convenient to offer hormonal therapy to people who undergo this type of intervention. In any case, they warn that in the investigation carried out they have not analyzed cause and effect in any case.
