New material doubles the frequency of light

1990/06/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

A new type of composite has been found at the British University of Sussex. This new material may be of interest for use in fiber optic communications. In this type of communications it is usually necessary to modify the frequency of light, this being the property of this new material. Changes in frequencies so far have been made by fragile crystals.

This new material is basically composite. This composite consists of small crystals in an organic polymer matrix. The material is transparent. The refractive index may vary by changing the organic polymer. The material is chemically stable and the tendency to vary the frequency of light does not vary over time.
