Moving dangerous models

1997/03/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

In the city of pilgrims Vindravan, located 150 kilometers from the Indian capital of Delhi, live more than a thousand rhesus macacos. Many years ago these monkeys rubbed their temples, but from here to laister will take them to new habitats.

This move has been presented as one of the greatest in wildlife. Although in the mythology of Hinduism monkeys are revered, the inhabitants of Vindravan and some wildlife experts claim that the aggressiveness of these animals has increased and must be changed. Macaques begin to steal bags and in some cases have entered the houses in search of food. And more seriously, these mischievous apes have bitten some citizens.

Under the umbrella of the World Wide Fund for Nature, a group will trap 600 monkeys. Once the poplars have been captured, they will be transferred to six rural centres 60 kilometres away. If the project is successful, the same system will be used in other countries.
