The City of Laudio and Elhuyar present the STEAM diagnosis of Laudio youth and the Bizilabe initiative

2022/03/16 STEAM-Hezkuntza (Elhuyar Zientzia)

The questionnaire involved 179 young people from 3 and 4 years of ESO in the city, who have demonstrated a lower vocation in girls than boys. To reverse this situation, the City Hall of Llodio and Elhuyar have launched the Bizilabe Laudio initiative, a leisure offer aimed at young people for science and technology activities.

The City of Laudio and Elhuyar today presented the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) diagnosis of the Laudio youth and the Bizilabe initiative to address their results. There are Ander Añibarro, mayor of Llodio; Loli Muriel, councilwoman for Social Development, Equality of Llodio; and Garazi Andonegi, coordinator of the Scientific Unit of Elhuyar.

The questionnaire on STEAM topics and professions has been answered by 179 ESO 3rd and 4th youth. 39.1% of participants were female and 49.7% male. The answers come from Ikastola de Laudio and from IES Laudio and La Milagrosa.

The questionnaire asks students about their interest in the fields of science and technology and their intention to work in related positions, as well as about the work activities in the region. The main conclusions of the questionnaire results are:

  • Traditional stereotypes affect the interests of young people towards issues. In general, science and technology occupy a small place in the interests of girls, but a great place in the interests of boys.
  • Stereotypes of conduct have the strength to select future professions. Girls have mostly chosen professions related to health sciences and teaching, while boys have chosen professions related to technology.
  • The degree of interest in subjects in general is low. Girls show greater interest in Biology and Language and Literature, while boys are interested in Informatics and Technology.
  • Young people believe that professional STEM is working people, scholars, clear and patient. Some of these characteristics are common adjectives to describe good students. Working in these positions implies that many young people usually associate their work with a long, demanding and difficult elaboration process, increasing the possibilities of choosing other studies.
  • From the point of view of future STEM work, girls and boys do not recognize the same level of difficulty: 49.4% of boys see themselves working in this sector and 34.3% of girls.
  • Girls and boys have a very different view of the lives of professional STEM, with boys being the ones who best value the lives of professional STEM and the ones who show the most interest in working in STEM in the future.
  • Working conditions between women and men engaged in science and technology are generally different among young people, while the regional approach is more positive and less accentuated.
  • 30% of young people are unaware of the region's industry and are not particularly attracted to working in the region's industry. However, there are young people, both boys and girls, who positively relate the industry and the work of the region.

In general, the results of the diagnosis show that knowledge about STEM activity in Laudio is low and that girls have a lower vocation than boys. The results of the questionnaire are summarized in the audiovisual “STEAM Llodio Diagnosis”.The results of the questionnaire are collected in:

Bizilabe Laudio initiative

In order to promote interest and motivation for science and technology among the young people of the locality, while at the same time it is intended to raise awareness of the work activity of the locality and of the region in general, Bizilabe Laudio will be born in the course of 2022-2023, with the help of the City of Laudio and Elhuyar. In addition, for the implementation of the project in Laudio, during the months of April and July various activities will be organized in the Bizilabe centre, which will open in the Gazteleku from the course 2022-2023. In this way, Bizilabe will be offering activities related to science and technology and after-school experiences for young people this year.

It is an initiative underway since Bizilabe 2017. It is a network of research centers for young people that already has its offer in Bilbao, towns of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal, towns of Bajo Deba and Tolosaldea.
