The International Space Station will also have an emergency vehicle. The first inhabitants of the station will be two Russians (Juri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev) and one American (William Shepherd): They will arrive in December 1999 and remain for 5 months until the next ones arrive. During his early years he will have a Russian spacecraft, Soyuz, for permanent emergencies.

Subsequently, the X-38 vehicle that is being specially prepared for the ISS in the US, will be used if something occurs in the space station and those present are forced to leave. This emergency vehicle for the crew will detach without the need for power from the orbit and then use a paragliding parachute that can be driven to land.
