Australia is the world's largest barrier reef, but it is not new. The news is a competitor that researchers have recently discovered. Researchers at Geoscience Australia have found a 100 square kilometer barrier during the study of sediment movements.
The finding has been made in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is very striking because the barrier is deeper than normal and in fairly dirty waters with little light. The discovery of corals in such precarious conditions has surprised researchers.
