The Basque scientific journal InpActa is born

“We think it is interesting to create a journal from our territory to make visible research specifically affecting the Basque Country,” says biochemist Ugo Mayor. Researcher Ikerbasque of the UPV and member of the team of editors of the journal InpActa.

The creators of the journal want political and social decisions to be made from scientific evidence, and that is the goal the journal has set. To this end, they will conduct a rigorous selection of scientific research to be significant and of great social impact. 22 universities, research centres and other institutions throughout the Basque Country have been involved in the project.

Mayor believes that the journal can influence different levels: citizens and institutions. In the former, they have the resources to develop their own criteria and take them into account in public and private institutions in the areas that determine education, surveillance, transport, culture, health, technology or public policies. The journal wants to influence the spaces of political decision.

The importance of scientifically addressing issues of high social impact was seen during the pandemic. Therefore, scientific journals collect research papers from all disciplines based on evidence.

In scientific journals, researchers who are experts in the specific field are used to review each article. The InpActa already has a drafting committee composed of 50 professionals who will guide this process. “The work of editor has acquired great importance in this journal, as it will address very diverse issues. And in teamwork, these things are much better managed, shared leadership,” says Mayor.

The journal will include, in addition to the technical articles, abstracts that any citizen can understand, written by Elhuyar. Technical articles have been published in English or Basque, extracts in Basque and in the other two official languages, Spanish and French. It will be Open Access in its entirety.
