The environment as a source of problems

1990/04/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The Environment Officer of EVE, D. Carlo Ripa di Meana has used harsh words against several EEA States, which do not meet the environmental standards dictated by most Member States.

In 1989, 362 official proceedings were opened against the European States for violation of the rules dictated by the European Commission on the environment. Spain has been the country that has opened the most procedures, with 57 procedures.

If Belgium has suffered most of the procedures for the use of chemical waste, France, Greece and Spain have had their weakest point in protecting nature. On the contrary, Denmark has been the one with the least procedures, so it has many possibilities of being the location center of the European Environment Agency. Currently, Cambridge, Copenhagen and Berlin compete for the location area.

Ripa di Meana, Belgium and Italy have been strongly criticized by these States that have not taken into account the decisions taken by the European Supreme Court. Although no sanction has yet been imposed, Ripa di Meana pointed out that sanctions will have to be imposed in the future. Meanwhile, he believes that the EVD will have to allocate more money to reinforce views on Agrarian Policy.
