In the attempt to save
this species, in 1986 and 1987 the last wild individuals were captured and a breeding program began in the zoos of San Diego and Los Angeles, not knowing if they could reproduce. On the other hand, many believe that locked individuals could not survive in wildlife.

To avoid this problem, all contact with the man was eliminated: the legends were not exposed to the public and the young were grazed with puppets similar to the towers. The problems of consanguinity have been largely inevitable, since the population was very small, but the captive population doubled in 1992 and in a protected area that same year the first couple returned to wildlife. Today you can see them in the sky in several natural parks.
