Last year the sun and wind generated more electricity than fossils in the EU

Last year, for the first time, wind and sun generated more electricity in the European Union than fossil fuels, according to ENBER the analysis.
The analysis highlights that the change is mainly due to the rapid expansion of solar energy. Overall, wind and sun generated 30% of the EU’s light force, compared to 29% of fossil fuels.
“They warn that the contribution of hydraulic energy is endangering climate change.”
Including hydropower, renewables generated nearly half of all EU electricity. However, they warn that the contribution of hydraulic energy is being threatened by climate change. In fact, last year the hydroelectric decreased and natural gas filled the water gap. However, natural gas, in addition to being fossil, needs to be imported and is expensive. According to the authors, it makes Europe vulnerable and it has been recommended to reduce this dependence.
In this sense, the expansion of the batteries has been positively valued. They allow part of the demand to be met in the dark, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and stabilizing prices.
However, the calculations of the Global Carbon Budget indicate that in Europe last year there was no decrease in carbon emissions, but rather an increase (0.4% increase compared to 2024).
