Light diffraction can be the key to seeing in three dimensions the image of a screen without the need for special glasses. In fact, some physicists from Hewlett-Packard laboratories have presented a diffraction based system in the journal Nature. There are already mobile phones that produce the three-dimensional effect without the need for glasses, but in mobile phones sold so far the viewer has a very reduced range of angles to see the effect of the three dimensions. With the system presented in the journal Nature, on the contrary, it shows the effect in a width of almost 180 degrees. To a certain extent, it is a simplified hologram technology. Holograms combine light diffraction with information of laser interference from different directions. This combination requires large calculations and the process is slow. Therefore, today it is impossible to create a video composed of holograms, since the screen should generate 30 holograms per second.
The new technology from Hewlett-Packard labs does not use lightning interference, making it faster. They create the image via LEDs, but instead of the unique version of the image they create 64 images simultaneously. Each image is an image of a certain view, that is, the difference between one and the other is a small angle. From there, the screen must divide the images and issue them in different directions in the space. To do this they pass the light emitted by the LEDs by a thin layer of glass. This layer has microscopic patterns that divert the light in certain directions so that each image is emitted in the corresponding direction. He only sees the images that reach that area where the viewer is. As a result, each eye sees a different image and the viewer's brain creates a three-dimensional image. Hewlett-Packard physicists claim that the effect of the three dimensions on the mobile screen is achieved by viewing these screens from more than one meter. At the moment, the new technology shows low quality images, but represents a breakthrough with hologram technology.
