Hydrogen Car
1989/11/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria
The car that appears in the picture, besides being an elegant example of Mercedes 23-E, is a special car: it works thanks to hydrogen.
It burns hydrogen in a relatively common engine and does not emit carbon (IV) or sulfur oxides into the atmosphere, although nitrogen oxides cannot be avoided. However, the electrolysis of water to obtain hydrogen from electric energy and the combustion of oil or coal for the generation of electric energy, make the pollution not generated by the car produced by the obtaining of hydrogen.
There are ways to cope with the problem, such as using solar energy to power electrolysis. However, these procedures should be improved and reduced.
The prototype made by Mercedes stores hydrogen in metal hydride tanks. Hydrogen is absorbed in metal hydrides. However, it is not possible to absorb large quantities and the autonomy of the car is very low, only 75 km.
