Fuel in dirty waters

2004/04/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

A mechanism has been designed to obtain electrical energy from domestic waste water.

In the same process, water treatment is facilitated, as it is largely cleaned.

Waste water is full of organic matter and there are many bacteria that feed on it. These bacteria burn sanitation water, food waste, etc. and turn it into carbon dioxide. In this process they extract electrons from organic matter. This new mechanism allows these electrons to be channeled to generate the fuel cell. Water is pumped into a carbon and platinum circuit.

They will still have to make more attempts, but plan to get a suitable fuel cell to be used in homes. In addition, they consider that if waste water becomes an economic resource, it is possible to facilitate basic sanitation in developing municipalities.
