Unification agreement for recordable DVDs

2002/04/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The new DVD is titled ‘Blue ray disc’ and will store 27GB, the quintet of what the previous ones keep.

To date there have been three different recording systems, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM and R/RW DVD, incompatible with each other. Philips, Samsung, Lg Electronics, Thomson, Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Hitachi, Pioneer and Sharp, the leading manufacturers, have come together to address this problem and have signed an agreement.

The blue ray disc will have a memory of 27 GB and a diameter of 12 cm, and will be read by existing systems. As for the capacity, a current disk can store 4.7 GB or a movie and the new disk will save 5 movies.

It should be noted that Toshiba, who developed his first DVD, is not among the signatories of the agreement.
