Colorado Grand Canyon Dam

1997/02/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

In the Grand Canyon of Colorado, the water valves under the Glen Canyon dam were emptied opening last spring. Of course, it was not evacuated by an emergency, but to restore the natural environment of yesteryear.

By emptying the Colorado Grand Canyon dam, scientists want an ecological benefit. New beaches are expected through native sediments.

The 2,250 kilometer-long Colorado River irrigates the lands of the states of California, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, and has traversed the river five hundred billion liters of water and sediment as before the dam in spring.

From this essay scientists seek an enormous ecological benefit. Through the sediments is expected the creation of hundreds of new beaches on the banks of the river. It is believed that plants grow and after them fauna can be produced.
