CERN Laboratory Jobs

1990/05/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

After a month of work in Geneva after the launch of the European Laboratory of Subatomic Particles by the organization CERN, they begin to receive results. In the accelerator they were able to obtain eleven thousand subatomic particles called Z°. This type of particles was detected by CERN in the SPS accelerator in 1983.

The Z° particle, which is part of four fundamental types of weak nuclear force in nature, has been possible to obtain eleven thousand thanks to four international trials (Aleph, Delphi, Opal and L3).

All these experiments have allowed us to determine that the particle mass Z° is 91.10 x 0.06 GeV. Particle totally unstable and with an average life of 1.35 x 10-24 seconds.

Another problem that has been solved with these trials is the number of families of neutrinos. With a probability of 95% it can be said that there are only three families of neutrinos and no more, as it is suggested that astrophysicists try to explain the hidden mass of the Universe.

This European accelerator is expected to continue to achieve good results. The usefulness of the current standard subatomic particle model, the existence of the Higgs boson, etc., can be demonstrated in it.
