Nine Belgian doctors have just published an interesting work in the magazine "The Lancet" on the usual diarrheics of tourists. A total of 15,185 stool samples were taken from patients and microorganisms from the Campylobacter family were isolated using a new filtration system. In the samples of 83 patients (92% of the cases were lower) a new campylobacter called campylobacter upsaliensis was found.

The diarrhea of the sick was quite peculiar: it was sudden and lasted less than a week. The fever increased little, but 25% had traces of blood. It is believed that the cause of the diarrhea of travelers is C. upsaliensis and that the ulcer of the stomach produces it, among others, a campylobacter.
