Lead detection biosensor

Researchers at the University of Illinois have prepared a system capable of detecting lead in situ and in real time. For this purpose they have used pieces of DNA for their low cost, stability and adaptation to technology based on fiber optic and chips.
A sequence of DNA has been distinguished that responds to the presence of lead: a special single-helix DNA that only captures lead ions. Subsequently, with the use of fluorescent markers, the sensitivity of the technique has increased. As for lead, it will be possible to prepare biosensors for other poisonous chemical elements.
