Simultaneous translation in six languages
1999/10/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria
An international consortium called C-STAR has developed a program that allows simultaneous translation into six languages. This software uses large dictionaries (over 10,000 words), instant translation systems and voice discrimination systems. It is the most powerful tool that has been developed so far for instant translations and that in the future can have many applications.
Through this program, a simulator has been created to organize trips that, through simultaneous translation, offers a lot of information from different villages and allows conversation with local people. The participants of the C-STAR organized an exhibition in August to explain the use of this simulator. In this exhibition the users of several villages, each from their village, were able to enter the program and converse with others without any problem or wait.
The C-STAR (Consortium for Speech Translation Advanced Research) group consists of: Carnegie Mellon University (United States), Advanced Telecommunications Research (Japan), Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (Korea), Communication Langagiere et Interaction Personne-Systeme (University of Grenoble, France), Stristituto Media Laborató University.
