This summer… superfoods!

2006/06/18 Galarraga Aiestaran, Ana - Elhuyar Zientzia

Every year, in early summer, wonderful diets appear: grapefruit, pineapple, lots of fat... Everyone commands the same better health or, above all, losing weight. This year superfoods are in fashion. In the book of an expert named Steven Pratt explains the essence of diet, and it seems that this diet does aim to improve health rather than weight loss.
In summer diets arise based on some "wonderful" food.

Most fashion diets are produced around a meal. Because of its unique qualities, it is only necessary to be well fed and, above all, to lose weight. However, the diet of superfoods is based on a wide variety of foods. In the first book written by Steven Pratt, fourteen diners formed the list of superfoods. Because other foods have been introduced in future editions, the list has been expanded.

On everyone's head is a fruit called akai. Native to the Amazon rainforest, small in size, round and dark purple. Although apparently similar to a grape grain, it has between 10 and 30 times more antioxidant than black grape or cranberry.

Antioxidants are fashionable compounds. Numerous studies have shown that they are able to neutralize the free radicals (harmful to health) generated by the body. As a result, researchers believe that they protect against cancer, the search for age, etc.

Based on this, they claim that drinking red wine is good — to the extent, of course. The food industry has also been based on the creation and sale of new products. Instead, Akaia has many antioxidants by nature. In addition, unlike most fruits, it also has protein, so it is understandable that it is the leader of superfoods.

Antioxidants and others

In the list of superlichens stand out several fruits and vegetables.

Behind the akaia are wild fruits, citrus and tea, especially Japanese tea called matcha. They are all rich in antioxidants and citrus and wild fruits also contain lots of vitamin C.

Another outstanding fruit is tomato. It has a powerful antioxidant, lycopene. Researchers have shown that it is really effective in protecting yourself from different types of cancer.

Broccoli is another reason why superfood protects against cancer. It also has a lot of calcium and iron. And legumes, for their fiber, calcium and protein content.

Blue fish and nuts appear as a result of the presence of omega-3 fatty acids, which help whole grains, especially oats, have an adequate concentration of cholesterol in the blood. And, of course, there is also yogurt among superfoods, not only for its high calcium content, but for its utility to control and balance the intestinal bacterial population.

Diverse opinions

The diet of superlichens is very successful, but do not forget that it does not perform miracles.

All foods included in the book contain health beneficial substances. In addition, the book includes a series of studies that demonstrate it. This does not generate discussion among experts.

However, not everyone agrees with the book or the message it spreads. Some people find it a very closed list. According to them, only the most researched foods appear, and there are eleven others that have not yet been studied, but as beneficial as they are.

On the other hand, from the reading of the book it seems that those who eat superfoods have no risk of cancer, heart problems, etc. And that is not true. Food has a great influence on health, but it is not the only agent at all.

Despite the opinions, the superfood diet is fashionable and seems to last longer than the summer song.
