The British Journal of Sports Medicine has published that sports shoes with air bag increase the chance of injury. In research with basketball players, the risk of injury to the ankle of those wearing these shoes was four times greater than that of those wearing conventional sneakers.

Inventors of shoes with air bag on the heel and sole intended to relieve the force exercised by athletes against the ground. However, this study has highlighted the importance of this type of shoe as a cause of injury. Apparently, the air bag causes loss of foot balance, with the risk that the player will lean when jumping or spinning.

Researchers analyzed 10,393 players, each throughout the match, and saw that 0.385% were ankle injuries. However, some of these injuries were due to incorrect warming before starting to play. On the other hand, the risk of injury of injured players is multiplied by five. In fact, more than half of injured players do not need medical help.

Therefore, more studies are needed to determine the impact of shoe air bags on player balance and injury risk. In addition, other types of shoes will be studied, as some believe that those who have a room inside the sole can cause similar damage.

Experts warn that not all types of shoes are suitable for all sports. Therefore, if you want to avoid injuries, you have to choose the footwear based on the personal characteristics and the exercise that is done.
