The computer science of the University of the Basque Country, Arantza Illarramendi, has been awarded the Aritmel Prize, one of the national computer science awards annually by the Spanish Society of Computer Sciences. With this award they wanted to reward the professional career of Illarramendi. The jury of the awards especially values the practical application of this research for the selection of the winners. Illarramendi and his team have worked with data processing. "We started with the databases and are now managing the data," says Illarramendi. "We are working in several areas within it, at this time what we are working most is health, for example applications for chronic patients."

Other winners of the national IT awards have been: Pere Brunet of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Francisco Herrera of the University of Granada, the company ATOS ORIGIN (Mare Nostrum Prize) and the public entity Red.es (Ramón Llull Prize).
