Telescopes, closer to the limits of the universe
Telescopes are constantly improving. This year’s novelty is the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, which has already begun to capture spectacular images of the vast universe. The Eibar Tekniker technology centre has been involved in the construction and development of this telescope. Among other things, they have a digital twin and it can be said that they have an eye in Chile every day.
Engineer Delina Murga directs the area of Astronomy and Space at IDOM. We spoke with him about the Vera Rubin Observatory, the advancement of technology and also about the ELT telescope that is expected to be completed by 2029.
The European Southern Observatory in Chile, in the Atacama Desert, is in the construction phase of the ELT or the Extraordinarily Large Telescope. with its 40-metre mirror, it will be the largest telescope ever built. There are companies working on this project in the Basque Country. One of them is IDOM, which has developed and manufactured two important systems for the ELT observatory.
Telescopes are also tools to learn about space or physics. Students of Physical Engineering applied to Industry at Mondragon University use them to learn the basics of physics. We made an appointment with them with the intention of looking at the sky of Bilbao.
